SONA College of Technology clinches national level FICCI Award 2020 -21 for Excellence in Institutional Social Responsibility.
In a strongly contested finals among top five finalists in the country, Sona College of Technology clinched the FICCI Award 2020-21. The college was recognized for its contribution in Excellence in Institutional Social Responsibility.
FICCI Awards are given to institutions that set benchmarks in higher education space.
For a college with its legacy rooted in philanthropy and social vision the award has come as a complement to the institution’s saga. “While it is a proud moment for the college, we acknowledge the support from management that sustains impactful social engagement,” said the Principal, Dr.S.R.R Senthil Kumar in his acceptance speech in the virtual award ceremony graced by eminent of juries.
Sona College Technology is perhaps the rarest among higher educational institutions to have a separate centre for social responsibility initiatives (CSRI) says P.Ragupathy, the Centre Head. Dating back to 30 years, the social responsibility activities of Sona Group of Institution are carried out in partnership with local community, corporate bodies and the government.
Local community is at the core of all institutional social responsibility programmes. The focus areas of CSRI’s interventions are Skill and Livelihood Promotion, Woman Empowerment, Entrepreneur Development, Career Planning and Guidance, Technology Transfer - Village Adoption/Rural Development, Health and Education. The beneficiaries were families below poverty line, school/college drop outs, and differently abled and disadvantaged women.
In three years from April 2018 to October2020, Sona’s CSRI in support of the extension service wing carried out about Rs. 5 crore worth social service activities benefiting 49,710 persons through 410 events under skill and Entrepreneurship Development, health and Education & other support services.
In the implementation, the Women Techno park (WTP) – Up gradation of specific indigenous technologies sponsored by department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
The Agri BPO - ICT interventions were used to promote women entrepreneurship sponsored by DST, Government of India,
Village Adoption programme under the Ministry of HRD, Government of India has identified Sona College as one of the institutions under the scheme of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) are the special initiatives in the stipulated period.
Societal oriented research being an ongoing activity at Sona College of Technology it gave us the preparedness to respond to the community needs during the unprecedented COVID -19 pandemic situations. An X-Ray based COVID-19 detection machine learning solution, automated hand sanitizer, cooling jackets for doctors and health workers to be free from sweating while wearing PPEs etc to state a few were designed by the college research centres.
The prestigious FICCI awards was given to Sona College of Technology amidst strong contenders like reputed and long standing Universities and Autonomous institutions in our country. The award empowers the institution to aim for higher level of social engagement for the holistic development of the community in the coming years and to set new benchmarks in Institutional Social Responsibility.
