AICTE Lilavathi Award 2022 - Winner Category Under Women Innovators
AICTE recognizes women empowerment in AICTE approved institutions through the AICTE Lilavati Award. In 2022, eight sub-themes were announced across sectors such as literacy and life skills, health care, sanitation and hygiene, women entrepreneurship, self defence, technology for women, legal awareness, and women innovators. Sona College of Technology applied under five themes, out of which three were shortlisted at the first level: women innovators, technology for women, and self defence. Dr. R. Malathy, Professor and Head of the Civil Department, and Dr. Gulshan Taj, Associate Professor of Civil Department, were part of the winning team in the Women Innovator theme.
Dr. R. Malathy
With over 30 years of teaching and 15 years in research, Dr. Malathy received the AICTE Visvesvaraya Best Teacher Award on 15th September 2020. Under her guidance, students won first prize in AICTE Smart India Hackathon 2020 and AICTE MAPATHON 2021. She has earned more than 15 awards including UGC Research Award 2016, Best Women Engineering College Teacher, and Outstanding Researcher Awards by ISTE. Dr. Malathy has filed 16 patents, presented research internationally, and published over 100 papers. She has produced 15 doctorates and is guiding 10 Ph.D. scholars. Currently, she serves as Professor & Dean (Research & Development) at Sona College of Technology and heads the SONA COIN research center.
Dr. Gulshan Taj
Dr. Gulshan Taj has 15 years of teaching and research experience and completed Ph.D. at IIT Roorkee in 2014 in functionally graded materials. She has published over 80 papers in national and international journals. Her research areas include structural health monitoring, remote sensing, green buildings, and advanced composite materials. She received the Best Women Engineer Award from IEI in 2017 and the Best Innovation Award from IIC. Her students’ projects have won awards from NDRF, ISTE, and AICTE. Dr. Taj also completed the IGBC AP examination with high score and serves as Secretary in the IGBC Student Chapter at Sona College of Technology.
Both faculty members have filed patents in various sectors aimed at helping rural women adopt technology for livelihood. They have conducted demonstrations and training sessions for village women and worked with SHG groups to motivate women to become successful entrepreneurs. Professor Dr. R. Malathy and Associate Professor Dr. Gulshan Taj aim to empower the women community by transferring technology via products and processes. Students from the Department of Civil Engineering are also encouraged to participate in such initiatives to become technopreneurs and successful entrepreneurs.
