On 24th September 2025, the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of Sona College of Technology actively participated in the Green Tamil Nadu Mission Day 2025, organized in collaboration with the Department of Tamil Nadu Forest. The initiative aimed to enhance tree cover, strengthen biodiversity, and promote community participation in greening activities across the state.

For the year 2025, ‘Naaval’ (Syzygium cumini) was designated as the flagship species of the mission. The Forest Department conducted a series of plantation events across districts, engaging students, volunteers, district officials, and forest personnel in the mission’s activities.

In Salem district, a large-scale plantation drive was launched with the target of planting 8.23 lakh saplings, with the objective of increasing the district’s forest cover from 28% to 33%. The campaign was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Mr. R. Rajendran, and the District Collector, Dr. R. Brindha Devi, at the Government Law College, Ariyanur. The chief guests of the event were Mrs. Veeramani, Forest Range Officer, Omalur S.F., Salem Forest Division, and Mr. S. Manoj, Forester, Forestry Extension Centre, Salem.

The plantation focused on native and commercially valuable tree species, including jamun, pungam, tamarind, kodukkapuli, neem, jackfruit, teak, silver oak, and malai vembu, with a special emphasis on jamun trees to promote ecological balance and biodiversity enhancement.

To achieve the target of 33% green cover, Salem district aims to increase its forest area by 386.65 sq. km over the next decade, averaging 38.67 sq. km per year. A total of 21 NSS volunteers from Sona College of Technology actively participated in the plantation drive, planting over 50 saplings, including Naaval and other native species, at Ayodhiyapattinam Thursday Sandy and the RTO Office, Kandhampatti, Salem. This initiative promoted environmental awareness among students and supported the state’s long-term goal of expanding green cover and conserving biodiversity.

The program was successfully conducted under the guidance of NSS Programme Officers, Dr. P. Iyyanar and Mr. A. Naveenkumar, with the enthusiastic participation of the volunteers.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the management and principal of Sona College of Technology for their constant encouragement and support towards all our extension and community service activities.
