Introduction to Vibrations and Industrial Applications of Vibration Analysis

A online guest lecture on the topic “Introduction to Vibrations and Industrial Applications of Vibration Analysis” was conducted by  the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Sona College of Technology, Salem on 10th May 2025. The lecture was specifically designed for second-year mechanical engineering students to provide them with a fundamental understanding of vibrations and their significance in the field of mechanical engineering, particularly in industrial settings.

The resource person for this session was Mr. Vikram, the Assistant Manager at JSW Steel Limited, Pottaneri, Salem. With a strong background in the steel industry, Mr. Vikram brought a wealth of knowledge and real-world experience to the lecture, making it an enriching experience for the students.

Key Highlights of the Lecture:

Mr. Vikram began the session with a detailed introduction to vibrations, explaining the various types of vibrations that occur in mechanical systems, such as free, forced, and damped vibrations. He emphasized the importance of understanding the fundamental principles of vibration analysis for the design, maintenance, and safety of machines and mechanical structures.

The lecture covered the following critical topics:

  • Basic Concepts of Vibrations: Mr. Vikram explained key concepts such as natural frequency, damping, resonance, and vibration modes, along with practical examples of how these principles are applied in industrial machinery.

  • Vibration Analysis Techniques: The various methods of analyzing vibrations in mechanical systems were discussed, including time-domain and frequency-domain analysis, and the tools and equipment used in industry to monitor and assess vibrations.
