Sona College of Technology’s National Service Scheme, in collaboration with the Salem Ornithological Foundation, successfully conducted a workshop titled “Feathers & Future: Empowering Engineers for Bird Conservation” on April 9, 2025, at GT Hall. The workshop was designed to highlight the crucial role of engineering in the conservation of bird species, emphasizing how technology and innovation can be used to address the growing threats to avian life. The primary objective of the workshop was to raise awareness among engineering students about the environmental challenges faced by birds and to inspire them to contribute technical and sustainable solutions toward bird conservation. It also aimed to foster an interdisciplinary approach by blending the principles of engineering and environmental science. Ms. Angeline Mano M., a renowned ornithologist from the Salem Ornithological Foundation, served as the resource person for the session. With extensive experience in avian research and conservation, she brought in valuable perspectives and practical knowledge to the workshop. Ms. Angeline Mano M delivered an insightful and engaging session covering the following critical areas: Monitoring Migration with Drones and Satellite Tagging, Renewable Energy and Its Impact on Avian Habitats, and Global Threats to Bird Species. Students actively participated in the interactive session, asking questions and sharing ideas on how engineering solutions such as smart sensors, eco-architecture, and environmental modeling can be used to support bird conservation efforts. Students gained a broader understanding of biodiversity and the ecological role of birds. The workshop fostered a spirit of collaboration between technical and environmental domains.

The workshop was a unique and impactful initiative that successfully bridged the gap between technology and nature. By empowering young engineers with knowledge and motivation, the event laid a strong foundation for future innovations in conservation. The NSS unit of Sona College of Technology, in partnership with the Salem Ornithological Foundation, hopes to continue such educational endeavors that align technology with environmental responsibility.
