Tamil Culture Preservation by Sona

The First International Conference on Tamil Diaspora was organized jointly by The Ministry of Arts and Culture, Republic of Mauritius; The International Tamil Diaspora Association, Mauritius; The Institute of Asian Studies, Chennai in collaboration with The Mahatma Gandhi Institute, Moka,  Mauritius. Around 200 participants from over 50 countries where Tamils have settled were present for the conference.

The Chairman of the organizing committee Prof Armoogum Parsuramen G.O.S.K, Founder-President Global Rainbow Foundation (A Charitable Trust) [Director and Representative, UNESCO (1998 – 2011), Senior Advisor, World Bank (1997 – 1998), Minister of Education, Arts & Culture & Science (1983 – 1995)] along with Dr.John Samuel, Director, Institute of Asian Studies, had invited Dr.Sabeenian and Prof.Paramasivam of ECE Department to demonstrate to the Tamil Diaspora Community their tool on “Expert Guided System for conversion to Printable form of Palm Leaf Manuscripts” .

An Exhibition was arranged as a part of the Conference with a theme of “Preservation of Tamil Culture and Identity” which was inaugurated by Dr Hon Navinchandra Ramagoolam, the Prime Minister of Republic of Mauritius in the august presence of Hon M.Choonee, Minister of Arts and Culture, Republic of Mauritius along with other eminent personalities.  The faculties demonstrated the developed by them.

The demonstration was highly appreciated by the Prime Minister, Republic of Mauritius and other Ministers of the Republic of Mauritius. A number of Tamil scholars from various countries visited the stall and appreciated the work.

Prof.Gregory James, professor in Linguistics and the Director of the Language Centre at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong was one of the eminent personality who visited the stall at the ‘V.Chellan Exhibition’ and highly appreciated the effort taken by the faculties.
