About Our Institute

Sona College of Technology traces its roots to Sri Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar, a renowned industrialist, freedom fighter, and educationist who established Thiagarajar Polytechnic College in 1958. Established in 1997 by its Founder Chairman, Sri M. S. Chockalingam, a distinguished textile industrialist and educationist, Sona College of Technology continues to build on this strong legacy under our current Chairman, Sri C.Valliappa, and Vice-Chairmen, Mr.Chocko Valliappa and Mr.Thyagu Valliappa. The college enjoys autonomous status under the Anna University and holds a NAAC A ++ accreditation with a CGPA of 3.65. It has a high NIRF Ranking falling within 151-200 band under engineering category. As a research and innovation focused institution, the college prides in its 36 advanced research centres which undertake cutting-edge research across disciplines. Sona’s SPEED, Premiar R&D centre designs and develops moters for ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 and Gaganyaan mission.

Sona’s global perspective has resulted in academic and research collaborations with national institutions like IIT (M) and international universities like Purdue University, Strathclyde University, University of Burgundy, Universita Politècnica, Delle Marche, Italy, Universiti Sains Islam, Malaysia, Selecian University of Technology, Poland, Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, to name a few. The faculty of Sona have been consistently ranked No.1 under the faculty performance rating of the NPTEL exams among 7000 colleges across the country for the 7th time, since the inception of the ranking in 2018. Sona NPTEL Local Chapter is rated “AAA” (17th Rank) in July-Dec 2024 NPTEL exams among 7,000 colleges in India.

Sona College of Technology has been a highly awarded institution at the national and state levels. It has been recognized as the ‘Best Industry-Linked Institution’, by the Confederation of Indian Industry and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE-CII), for seven consecutive times. Recently, Sona has been honoured with the prestigious Outstanding Institution Award-2024 by the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR), Chandigarh. The college has received the IE(I) - Institution of Engineers' (India) Engineering Education Excellence Award (Silver and Bronze Categories) for the past three years. Sona stands tall as one of the best institutions for world class technical education.

About Department of Humanities and Languages

One of the founding departments of Sona College of Technology, the Department of Humanities and Languages came into existence along with the establishment of the college in 1997. The main objective of the department is to develop communicative competence and performance of the students in English. A team of well experienced and vibrant English faculty with proven excellence in teaching and research carries forward the mission of the institution. The department also offers Hindi and foreign languages like French, German, Japanese and Korean. Recently, the department has taken initiative to collaborate with the University of Complutense, Madrid, to establish a Systemic Functional Linguistics Lab that will serve as a Centre of Excellence for linguistic research and carry out research in the areas of discourse analysis, multilingual education, text generation and computational linguistics and to have students and faculty exchange programmes.
