The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) is the largest multidisciplinary professional body encompassing fifteen engineering disciplines, providing engineers with a global platform for sharing professional interests. Established in 1920 with its headquarters in Kolkata, IEI has been serving the engineering fraternity for over a century and has been closely associated with the growth of modern engineering in India.
In 1935, IEI was incorporated by Royal Charter and remains the only professional body in India to have received this honour. With a membership strength exceeding 2.6 lakhs, IEI operates through 124 centres across India and six overseas chapters. It maintains bilateral agreements with 31 international bodies and holds membership with eight international organizations across developed nations.
The Salem Local Centre of IEI, established in 1994, is one of the most active centres engaged in translating the objectives and ethics of IEI into practice. The Centre was inaugurated on 30th October 1994 by Late Shri P. Rangarajan Kumaramanagalam, Hon'ble Minister of State for Science & Technology, Government of India.
IEI-SLC currently has 2,780 Corporate Members, 4,405 Student Members and 18 Institutional Members. The Centre regularly organizes technical lectures, special talks, industrial visits and observes national and international events such as Engineers' Day, World Environment Day and World Telecommunication Day, fostering industry–academia interaction.
Sona College of Technology traces its roots to Sri Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar, a renowned industrialist, freedom fighter and educationist. Established in 1997 by its Founder Chairman Sri M. S. Chockalingam, the institution continues its legacy under the leadership of Chairman Sri C. Valliappa and Vice Chairmen Mr. Chocko Valliappa and Mr. Thyagu Valliappa.
The college enjoys autonomous status under Anna University and holds a NAAC A++ accreditation with a CGPA of 3.65. It has secured high NIRF rankings, falling within the 11–50 band under the Innovation Category and 151–200 band under the Engineering Category.
The Department of Fashion Technology was established in 2001 with the launch of the B.Sc. Apparel and Fashion Technology programme, followed by the B.Tech. Textile Technology (Fashion Technology) programme in 2005. The department is supported by a highly qualified faculty team comprising doctorates and postgraduate members, ensuring strong academic and research mentorship.
Recognized as a Research Centre by Anna University, the department offers Ph.D. programmes and is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and modern textile and garment machinery. It has received the prestigious AICTE–CII Mentor Award for Best Industry-Linked Technical Institute four times.
