The National Science Day was celebrated by the Department of Sciences, Sona College of Technology on 28.02.2023 at Sri Valliappa Auditorium. Dr. C. Shanthi, Head of the Department of Sciences welcomed the gathering. Dr. S.R.R. Senthil Kumar, Principal delivered a special address about the importance of Science in Engineering Education and motivated the first year students to take part in the research activities being carried out in various R & D centres of Sona College of Technology. He highlighted the achievements and contributions of SONASPEED, one of the pioneer and renowned R & D centres of Sona College of Technology, in ISRO’s  satellite launching programmes. He also advised the first year students to utilize the guidance of the Science faculty members’ for their achievements. Dr. V.S. Venkatavaradan, Former Director, Nehru Planetarium, Mumbai and former Professor Emeritus of Sona College of Technology delivered a special address about the importance of Science in higher education.

The Chief Guest of the function, Dr. K. Sathiyanarayanan, Professor of Chemistry, Former Registrar, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), delivered a lecture on the discovery of Raman Effect by Sir C.V. Raman and his achievements. He encouraged the students to excel in their academic and achieve more in their domains like Sir C.V. Raman. The guest of honour of the function, Mr. K. Santhosh Kumar, Elite alumnus of Sona College of Technology, Scientist/Engineer SF, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), ISRO,  Thiruvananthapuram gave an extensive talk on satellite launching of ISRO from the inception. He also explained the recent achievements of ISRO and explored the opportunities in ISRO for Engineers. The students thoroughly enjoyed the live session given by Mr. Santhosh Kumar.

As a part of Science Day Celebrations, various competitions such as, JAM (Just a minute), Science Quiz, Paper Presentation, Multimedia presentation, Making of Sirpi and Working Science Models were conducted exclusively for all the first year students to showcase their hidden talents.  Students of various departments were enthusiastically participated in all the competitions. Prizes and Certificates were distributed by the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, Head of the Department and Senior Professors to all the winners of the competitions.
