A faculty development program was organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 04th to 15th November 2019 at SONA College of Technology on “Computational Techniques in Heat and Fluid flow”. This was a two week Faculty Development Program where various related subtopics were discussed in detail by eminent educationists and a very beneficial academic environment was experienced by the participants.

The FDP commenced on 04th November 2019. The faculties were welcomed by the Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering Dr. D Senthil Kumar. The first technical session was on the topic introduction and was discussed by the head. HE also discussed the latest trends which are observed in various industries and the perception of faculties regarding the same. The lecture was very beneficial and provided an insight on the various challenges associated which a teacher educator has to overcome. The technical session was followed by lunch. Dr. G Suganthi carried the afternoon session on Computation for free vibrations of smart structured by FEM.

On second and third day, the guest speaker was Mr. S. Gobinath from Mahendra&MahendraLtd. He gave a detailed lecture on the aerodynamics and the effect of aerodynamics on CFD. It was also discussed the requirement of CFD for the analysis purposes. The session was followed by lunch.

The fourth and fifth day technical sessions were addressed by Dr. A Deiveegan. He addressed the mathematics needed to perform the CFD calculations. Various mathematical skills were discussed in detail over the two sessions of the day. Various case studies were discussed and the skills required were elaborated. Dr. Deiveegan cited and practiced the examples to make the attainment of the skills very clear. In all, the technical sessions provided a good learning experience. This was followed by lunch.

On the sixth and seventh day both technical and practical sessions were organized. Participants were fortunate to listen to Mr. J. Chandranfrom Honeywell, Chennai. Mr.Chandrandiscussed the fundamentals and practical applications of CFD. The various competencies that need to be developed and the preparation required from the side of the engineers were discussed.

Day eight was addressed by Dr. M. Piramanandhan from ESAB India Lts. and the topic of discussion was role of CFD in thermal management of new products. Dr. Piramanandhanprovided various case studies and how the industries need the technology related to CFD to meet the technical needs effectively.

On day nine the theory and practical sessions were held by Prof. R Yuvaraj, Asst. Prof in the department of mechanical engineering. Prof. Yuvaraj discussed about Python programming and also discussed the computations of heat transfer using python. Prof. Yuvaraj,  provided various examples and case studies where python was used to solve the heat transfer related problems.

On the last day, the morning session was addressed by Dr. D. Senthil Kumar where he talked about two phase heat flow, its applications and practical examples. For the second session for the day, Dr. K. Venkatesh Raja addressed the session on using ANSYS software to solve heat and mass transfer problems. After lunch, last session of the FDP i.e. the valedictory session was held. Report of the FDP was presented by Dr. D. Senthil Kumar. Certificates were distributed and votes of thanks were provided by faculty members.
