A guest lecture was conducted to our civil engineering and post graduate structural engineering students exclusively on the practical approach on design of bridges which will help them to understand the concept of bridge configurations and the design loadings as per code provision on 11th Febraury 2017 in the MBA conference hall.The resource person was Er.M.Ravi Kumar, Assistant General Manager, Structural division, Larsen & Tourbo (L&T) IDPL, Chennai.He started with the statement that the engineering concepts base is from the nature and stated the role of bridge and its function. He appraised various parts of the bridge like superstructure consist of deck slab and girder, substructure consist of pier cap and pier and foundation with sketch. He also explained the necessity of the types of bridges starting from small structures to massive structures ordering from pipe and box culverts, Underpasses (Animal, reptile, cattle, Pedestrian, Vehicular), minor bridges, major bridges, flyovers, elevated corridors, Rail over bridges (ROB) and Rail under bridges (RUB). He also listed the loadings on the bridge as per IRC 6 and its specifications. He finally finished his presentation with projects he has been involved.
