WORKSHOP ON 28.12.17& 29.12.17 ON 3D PRINTING

A workshop was conducted on 3D printing in association SA 3D solutions, Chennai. The workshop was arranged for third and second year students of Civil engineering in APJ Abdul Kalam Hall from 10.00AM onwards.

The resource person for the workshop was Mrs.VidhyaSrikanth, CEO of SA 3D solutions, Chennai. They emphasized that the future technology is to have 3D printing skills in major fields for potential growth and development. 3D printing has applications in various industries like Architecture, Automotive, Aerospace, Engineering, Jewellery, Medical and manufacturing, etc., Around 50 students attended the workshop along with 5 staff members. The workshop was fecilitated with Dr.V.JayaPrakash (Director – Industry Connect), Dr.M.Usha (Principal) and Dr.R.Malathy (Head of Department – Civil). The students learned on how to design, scan, model and print the 3D model in the printers with various configurations. Students themselves modelled in the AUTODESK FUSION 360 software and then exported to stl file in CURA software and printed.

A student report on the workshop stated that “Got hands on experience to convert 3D models into 3D printable files and baked it in 3D printers 250C. To explain technically, the raw material fed into the material is PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol) which gets fused at 250C and is jetted through 0.4mm nozzles to be laid over layer and over time we get a 3D extruded model served right in front of us. The tiny model, however, took approximately 33minutes to come out of tray. The cost of printing is approximately INR 5.00 per minute which sounds expensive but the way this technology converts our imagination into instant reality is worth it.”
