As the country celebrates, the 75th Independence Day today, the Vice Chairman, Sona Group of Institutions Mr. Thyagu Valliappa hoisted the national flag and addressed the students and visitors. 

Fervor and gaiety marked the occasion although the gathering was restricted due to COVID-19. It is for the 64th Year the Independence Day is being celebrated in the Sona Ground reminded, Mr.Thyagu Valliappa. 

On his arrival in the Sona grounds, the Vice Chairman was greeted by the Principal Thiagarajar Polytechnic, Dr.V.Karthikeyan, Principal Sona College of Technology, Dr.S.R.R Senthil Kumar, Principal Sona College of Arts and Science, Dr.Kadhar Nawaz,  Sona Medical College of Naturopathy and Yoga Dr.S.Madan Kumar, Principal Sona Valliappa Public School,Mrs.E.J.Kavitha. 

The men and women cadets of the NCC and NSS of the colleges presented a combined salute. Mr. Thyagu Valliappa inspected the guard of honour and hoisted the tricolor national flag. As a honour to the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters for the nation, the theme of the 75th Independence Day this year is ‘Nation First, Always First’. The speeches reflected this theme.

Sri Karmuttu Thiagarajar as a freedom fighter remembered 

In his address to the students Mr.Thyagu Valliappa underscored the role of  the founder of Sona Group Sri.Karumuttu Thiagarajar as an ardent freedom fighter. 

 “I consider two personalities significant to the freedom movement. One is Mahatma Gandhi and the other is Sri Karmuttu Thiagarajar. Long before the Make in India concept was introduced, Sri Karumuttu Thiagarjar had in the 1930’s thought about it and implemented it. Yet he will be remembered more as a freedom fighter. The ideas and sacrifices of the freedom fighters have enabled people to move and think freely and achieve progress in the last 75 years,” he said. 

Envisioned: Salem and Sona’s growth in 100th Independence Day  

Recounting the significant strides made by the country in the last 75 years, Mr. Thyagu Valliappa talked about the youth power of the country now as compared to Japan whose average age is double than ours. Urging students to look into the future with a long-term vision and a flexible mind; he said that when the country celebrates the 100th. Independence Day, Salem and Sona Group of Institutions would have grown by leaps and bounds. “While Salem will become a major industrial hub with high growth potential for employment, Sona’s industry connect and start up support programs will be of big help in the process,” he added. 

In his address, Dr. V.Karthikeyan, said that wonderful changes were taking place in Sona Group of Institutions as it enters its 65th year, he thanked Mr.Thyagu Valliappa for his initiatives, the heads of the departments and staff for their efforts. 

Dr.S.R.R Senthil Kumar said that he could foresee Sona Institutions growing in stature comparable to IITs when India celebrates its 100th. Independence Day. “We have to dream as Dr.Abdul Kalam advised and plan well to reach big heights. When you return to your alma mater during the 100th Independence Day, you will see those plans become reality,” he told the students. 

Dr.Kadhar Nawaz, Principal, Sona College of Arts and Science, Sona Medical College of Naturopathy and Yoga Dr.S.Madan Kumar, Principal Sona Valliappa Public School, Mrs.E.J.Kavitha also addressed the students. 

The ceremony ended with national anthem led by the Sonaria band.
