Science - Academic Excellence

  • Dr. C. Saravanan, Assistant Professor of Chemistry received a research grant of Rs. 8,25,000/- from SERB-TARE for the research project entitled “Luminescent organic molecular thermometers and their applications” for a period of three years (October 2022 - October 2025).
  • The faculty members have published 12 research papers in SCI journals during the period January 2023 - June 2023.
  • Dr. B. Shanmugavelu, Assistant Professor of Physics published three research papers in SCI Journals with impact factor 15.1, 4.6, and 4.3 respectively.
  • 18 Faculties successfully completed NPTEL online certification courses. (Category: Elite + Gold – 2, Elite + Silver – 8, Elite -8).
  • Dr. S. Radjarejesri, Professor of Chemistry, successfully completed 4 online NPTEL courses during the year of Jan 2023 to April 2023. Dr. S. Radjarejesri received award of NPTEL STAR- NPTEL BELIEVER and NPTEL ENTHUSIAST. She was invited for a special event (IIT campus) to interact with the NPTEL team and coordinators from various institutions.
  • Dr. P. Kavitha, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics has awarded Ph.D. in May 2023 under the Guidance of Dr. C. Shanthi, Professor of Physics and Head, Department of Sciences.
  • The faculty members have published 14 research papers (9 in SCI indexed journals and 5 in Scopus indexed journals) during the period January 2022 - June 2022.
  • 8 faculties successfully completed NPTEL online certification courses. Out of which 3 of them are Toppers, ELITE + Gold - 1, ELITE + Silver - 6; Elite - 1.
  • Dr. C. Saravanan has started the project titled “Synthesis and characterization of fungal derived Gold Nano particles” in collaboration with  Mycelium Sona Biotech Private Limited, Salem
  • Dr. Rajasri Sen Jaiswal, Head, CRRP, Conducted Webinar on Python at an International level. 233 participants from ten countries registered for the event.
  • Dr. Rajasri Sen Jaiswal, served as a Reviewer in the International Journals (SCI).
  • Dr. A.P. Uthirakumar, Associate Professor Department of Chemistry has reviewed three research articles in SCI journals
  • Dr. M. Muthukrishnan, Assistant Professor (Sr.Gr), Department of Physics has awarded Ph.D in May 2022 under the Guidance of  Dr. C. Shanthi, Professor and HOD, Department of Sciences.
  • Dr. S. Radjarejesri acted as a resource person for online Induction Programme on Design Thinking conducted by Sona Medical College, Salem.
  • SONASTARCH centre has generated revenue of Rs. 95, 108 through its testing services for Sago and starch analysis, water analysis and ores analysis.
  • Dr. C. Saravanan, Assistant Professor of Chemistry received a Research grant of Rs. 15,00,000/- from DST-SERB for the research project entitled “Luminescent organic molecular thermometers and their applications” for a period of three years (October 2022 - October 2025).
  • Dr. C. Shanthi, Professor of Physics, Head, Department of Sciences emerged as NPTEL Topper of 1% in the course Teaching and Learning in General Programs in the NPTEL Online Certification exam conducted by IISc Bangalore during the period July 2022 – November 2022.
  • Dr. V. Balasubramanian, Professor of Physics, emerged as NPTEL Topper of 2 % in the course Teaching and Learning in General Programs in the NPTEL Online Certification exam conducted by IISc Bangalore during the period July 2022 – November 2022.
  • Faculty members of Science Department published 15 research papers in SCI journals and 4 papers in SCOPUS indexed journals.
  • Dr. M. Muthukrishnan and Dr. C. Shanthi published a paper entitled “Biodegradable Flexible Proton conducting Solid biopolymer membranes based on pectin and ammonium salt for electrochemical applications” in the “International Journal of Hydrogen Energy” (SCI indexed Journal) with impact factor 7.139.
  • Dr. B. Shanmugavelu, Assistant Professor of Physics published a paper entitled “Enhanced photo detection performance of silver-doped tin sulfide photo detectors for visible light photo detection” in the Sensors and Actuators A: Physical (SCI indexed Journal) with impact factor 4.291.
  • Dr. Rajasri Sen Jaiswal, Professor of Physics received International Travel Grant from INSA to go to Portugal.
  • Dr. Rajasri Sen Jaiswal acted as reviewer in the Atmospheric Science Letters, Royal Meteorological Society ; and MDPI Sustainability –both SCI journals.
  • Dr. Rajasri Sen Jaiswal presented two papers at International conferences in Germany, and Portugal.
  • Dr. Rajasri Sen Jaiswal published a paper in International Conference Proceeding (WoS); and an abstract also published.

  • Dr. A.P. Uthirakumar, Associate Professor of Chemistry has reviewed six SCI journals.
  • Dr. T. Maruthavanan, Associate Professor of Chemistry acted as a resource person for online FDP Programme on Innovations in Energy and Applied Chemistry conducted by Department of Chemistry, Nehru Institute of Technology,  Coimbatore.
  • Dr. C. Saravanan, Asst. Professor of Chemistry has developed a product - liquid starch spray for garment stiffening in association with SONASTARCH members and signed an MoU with M/s Meera Enterprises, Salem.
  • SONASTARCH centre has generated revenue of Rs. 1.34 lakhs through its testing services for Sago and starch analysis, water analysis and ores analysis.
  • Department of Sciences contributed 15 research papers in the International Virtual Conference on Applied Science, Technology, Management and Language Studies (ASTMLS-2020) held on 11th & 12th December 2020.
  • Dr A. P. Uthirakumar published a paper in a Top Q1 Journal “Applied Surface Science” of Elsevier Publication which has an impact factor of 6.182 and also he has completed his outstanding research in “Emerging Nano-technological Advancement in Light Emitting Diodes” at the National Research Foundation of Korea through the Brain Pool Program.
  • Department of Science continues one industry consultancy project on “Process development for Posaconazole” in the research centre SONA-AROMA.
  • Dr. Rajasri Sen Jaiswal completed the ISRO-funded research project on GPS-based precipitable water estimation.
  • Dr. Rajasri Sen Jaiswal submitted a new research project to ISRO on Physics of Melting Layer.
  • Dr. Rajasri Sen Jaiswal published 2 papers in Scopus international conference proceedings; 1 paper in UGC CARE journal accepted; 1 SCI journal paper is likely to be accepted. She presented 4 papers in international conferences.
  • Dr. Rajasri Sen Jaiswal reviewed a paper in an international journal indexed in Scopus.
  • Dr. Rajasri Sen Jaiswal’s 3 Papers are under review  in the SCI journals.
  • Dr. Rajasri Sen Jaiswal’s discovery on the origin of corona: prediction proved to be correct.
  • Dr. Rajasri Sen Jaiswal, Head, CRRP, Physics Department conducted 2 international level  webinars by the world-renowned astrophysicist on  “MISSION ADITYA”- INDIA’S 1ST MISSION TO THE SUN;  and webinar on E-Waste Management by the Director, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
  • Department of Sciences conducted three online refresher courses during the period July 2020 to December 2020 for the faculty members and research scholars and generated revenue of Rs. 97,450.e
  • ISRO – Respond funded project entitled “Improvement in size uniformity of self - assembled InAs quantum dots on GaAs substrate by rapid thermal annealing” has been successfully completed by Dr. S. Saravanan, Professor of Physics and Centre Head for Photonics and Nanotechnology
  • Dr. S. Saravanan has liaised with Japanese organizations to identify native Japanese teachers for teaching the language through the Sona Centre for Linguistics (SLIC). He is also in regular touch with HR organizations in Japan for student placement in Japan.
  • 13 Sona students have been placed in Japanese companies located in Tokyo, Japan based on their Japanese language proficiency with a salary of 18.54 lacs per annum. One more student placed in a company located at TOKYO with a salary of 15 lacs per annum.
  • Under the guidance of Dr. S. Saravanan, Professor of Physics and Head, Centre for Photonics and Nanotechnology (SONA PAN) a research scholar Mr. M. Balamurugan has completed his doctoral degree from Anna University, Chennai on 23rd March, 2018.
  • Under the guidance of Dr. C. Shanthi Professor and Head, Department of Sciences, a research scholar Ms. R. Santhi has completed her doctoral degree from Anna University Chennai on 27th April, 2018.
  • Dr. G. Shanthi, Assistant Professor of Chemistry emerged as Topper (Elite+Gold) in the NPTEL online course entitled “A Study Guide in Organic Retrosynthesis: Problem Solving Approach”, from January – April 2018 (12 Week Course)
  • 21 NPTEL online courses were successfully completed with one Topper and 10 Elite categories by thirteen faculty members during 2017 -2018.
  • Dr. M. Silambarasan, Assistant Professor of Physics received Best Oral Presentation Award in the BRNS (Board of Research on Nuclear Science) Sponsored National Conference on Nanomaterials – 2017 (NCN 2017), in the topic “Investigation of Frequency Dependent Dielectric Properties and Optical Applications of Silver-doped Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles”, held at Arignar Anna Government Arts College, Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, India, from 20th to 21st July 2017.
  • Dr. M. Silambarasan, Assistant Professor of Physics, acted as Resource Person for the topic “Smart material-based radiation sources”, in the BRNS Sponsored “National Seminar on Radiation Exposure - Effects and Protection for Comprehensive Health Promotion” organized by the department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Kongu Engineering College, Perundurai, Tamil Nadu, INDIA from 19th January 2018 to 20th January 2018.
  • Dr. C. Saravanan, Asst. Professor of Chemistry received INSA (Indian National Science Academy) Visiting Scientist fellowship at IIT Guwahati for three months from June 2018 – August 2018.
  • Tamil Nadu Agricultural Marketing Board, Uthamacholapuram, Salem invited Dr. T. Maruthavanan, Dr. N. Panneer Selvam and Dr. C. Saravanan of Chemistry department to give Technical Lectures for Agmark Officers of Food Products Testing Laboratories, Tamil Nadu on 7th March 2018.
