Satish Dhawan Space Center (SDSC) SHAR, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Sriharikota celebrated the “World Space Week 2017” from 4th to 10th of October 2017 as declared by the UNO. The celebrations were conducted in association with Sona College of Technology which has a ten year association with ISRO on various projects. The objective of WSW was to propagate the benefits of Indian Space Programme to Scientific, Academic and general public. Accordingly, an awareness programme was organised in Salem zone through various events and exhibitions to inspire the young minds and reap the benefits for future generations, especially the rural and urban community.
Staff members of Sona College of Technology reached two hundred schools in and around Salem and conducted various events like Quiz, Drawing, Elocution and Science models on the theme of “Space Science and Technology.” The second round of events was held in Sona College of Technology on the 5th of October, 2017. A selection through Quiz was also conducted on 9th October among the winners to witness the Rocket launch in Sriharikota. ISRO organised a space exhibition on the 8th and 9th of October in Sona College of Technology. Products developed by Sona college of Technology were also displayed in the exhibition.

The celebrations began with a space awareness walk at 7.00am on the 8th morning. More than 600 school students joined the awareness walk. The welcome address and introduction to world space week, 2017 at the Inauguration was given by Shri.R.Senthilkumar CGM,SMP & ETF, SDSC SHAR Chairman. Shri. V. Ranganathan, Deputy Director, SPP, SDC SHAR Program Director ISRO presented the Keynote address. The programme was presided over by Shri. C.Valliappa, Chairman, Sona Group of Institutions. Shri. Chocko Valliappa, Vice Chairman, Sona Group of Institutions, delivered the Special Address and Shri. Thyagu Valliappa, Vice Chairman, Sona Group of Institutions, delivered the Inaugural Address. More than eight thousand audience witnessed the ISRO exhibition. School students from distant places like Neyveli, Pondicherry, Villupuram, etc. also visited the exhibition. Winners of the events were awarded at the Valedictory Function by Shri. R. Shridharan, Honorable Additional District Judge, Salem, Shri.K.Ponginan, Deputy Director, ISSF, SDSC Shar and Shri. Thyagu Valliappa, Vice Chairman, Sona Group of Institutions.
