ICI Salem centre in association with Department of Civil Engineering,Sona College of Technology,salem organized one day national seminar on Alternatives for River Sand in Construction (ASCON’18) at PG Auditorium on 27.2.2018.Dr R Malathy, Chairman ICI Salem centre and Professor & Dean (R&D) welcomed the gathering. She said that industries are generating enormous waste which poses serious threat to the environment. In one or the other way, that waste has to be disposed off. The best possible way to dispose it off is by converting waste into wealth. She has given an overview of various sources of wastes. She emphasized the importance of research in this area. Shri Choco Valliappa congratulated for having coined apt title which suits the present scenario. The chief guest Shri D Ravichandran,CEO,JSW Salem addressed the production of steel slag from steel manufacturing industry. SONA COIN Research Centre at SCT is now working on utilization of slag as fine and coarse aggregate in concrete, he added.He suggested that students should take an active part in research involving these kinds of wastes as construction material. Dr Kingsley J D Ernest, Concrete Specialist, L&T Construction gave a glimpse on Indian Standard code IS:383:2016.problem with the crusher sand is that if it is not checked properly at the source point , then % clay and  silt will make the concrete weak.

He added that use of crusher sand gained its importance over the past 20 years. Techno-commercial viability is to be checker if customer is looking for alternative to river sand. While addressing Er L R Manjunatha, AGM Marketing, JSW Cement,Bengaluru said by 2050, 9.8 billion people will exist on the earth. There will be a need to create concrete jungles. Now the river sand has become the rarest material on earth due to excessive mining. Slag will be the best alternative to sand. 12% of CO2 emission is due to production of cement and steel. In his concluding remarks, he has listed the real time applications of slag sand in construction. Er Venkat, Trade Vision Group, Bengaluru addressed about new technology for manufacturing M sand. He said that technology and quality control plays a vital role in ensuring the quality of M sand. He discussed about the latest technologies involved in production of M Sand. Er Mahabala Sharma, general Manager Sales, Proman Infrastructure Services Pvt Ltd,Bengaluru also discussed the stages of M sand manufacturing.

Dr T Ch Madhavi,Professor, SRM Universiy, Chennai discussed about the utilization of copper slag in concrete. Copper slag is a by-product from sterlite industry, aluminium industry and so. Copper slag is being used as filler medium in concrete which is done at laboratory scale. She concluded by saying this kind of research has a great future. Dr K Jagadeesan , Professor, SCT,Salem presented on fly ash aggregates. He has replaced fine and coarse aggregate with flyash. He also said that the results showed a very good performance.Er Sanjay Kumar, UltraTech Cement ltd delivered vote of thanks.
