Department of Civil Engineering in association with The Institution of Engineers (India) Salem Local Chapter organized Two days All India Seminar on “Sustainable Approach for utilizing Industrial Wastes in Concrete Construction” on April 26th and 27th, 2019 at Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Hall, Sona College of Technology, Salem. The seminar commenced with an introduction by Dr R Malathy, Profesosr/HoD and gave a short introduction about the seminar and emphasized on the importance of industrial waste utilization in concrete. Er D Arulselvan, The chairman, IEI Salem Local Centre, Salem welcomed the gathering and shared the importance of becoming an IEI student member. He also added that there are options where student can avail funding for UG, PG and Ph.D students. The chief guest Dr V Karthikeyan, Principal, Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, and Salem gave inaugural address and appreciated the conduction of seminar so that the industries can find their way to dispose of industrial by products. This is the only possible way to save the agricultural land from becoming infertile. The seminar proceedings were released by the chief guest. Er S Loganathan, The Secretary, IEI Salem Local Centre, Salem showed his gratitude for the management, faculty members, students and participants for supporting in organizing such seminar.
Day 1:
Session 1: Flyash Aggregates in Concrete- Dr K Jagadeesan, Professor and Dean (PG), SCT,Salem
In his session, he explained the significance of utilizing fly ah wastes as aggregates in concrete. He also discussed the experimental works made using fly ash aggregates and compared the results with the conventional aggregates. He explained the cost effectiveness of concrete making using such aggregates. He also requested the students to do some research and explore the areas of improvement so that it can be extensively used in real time construction products.
Session 2: Sustainable Construction using Industrial Waste by products – Dr R N Krishna, Proprietor, KC Contech, Chennai.
Nowadays conventional resources are getting depleted and usage of construction material consumption is getting increased due to phenomenal growth in infrastructure development. He said that utilization of industrial wastes alone be the only solution to reduce the natural resources exploitation. He just shared his experience by showcasing a Case Study made in Singapore. He also said that India is not utilizing industrial wastes in real time applications.
Session 3: Utilisation of industrial wastes for sustainable development- Dr S Lavanya Prabha, HoD/Easwari Engineering College, Chennai.
She has listed the types of industrial byproducts and how well these wastes can be effectively used in concrete. She also added the statistical report on utilizing wastes per day per person every year. Researches have not to be confined only to a laboratory scale and it has to be commercialized so as to minimize the issues.
Session 4: Environmental impact of slurry generated from granite cutting and polishing industry- Dr S Jothi Venkatraman, Assistant Engineer, Pollution Control Board, Erode.
He shared his experience while he was appointed as assistant engineer, pollution control board, Hosur. Granite hub is located in that region which produces ton and tons of granite cutting and polishing wastes. The company approached the board for disposing of this waste effectively without imposing any threat to the environment. Researches have to be made wider so that such kinds of effects can be eliminated.
Day 2:
Session 1: Redmud-flyash geocrete application for sustainability- Er R V Ramani, CEO, ARGUSD Concrete Solutions, Llc, USA/India.
Aluminium and copper industries are producing enormous amount of redmud wastes per day. Approximately 4000 tons of wastes are produced every day. If we look at the utilization of such wastes, it is very meagre. Now we have installed a plant where 1500 tons of wastes are being utilized for making artificial fibres every day. He also shared an experimental study on utilizing redmud-flyash in geopolymer concrete.
Session 2: Artificial Aggregates- Dr T Palanisamy, Assistant Professor, NIT Karnataka, Surathkal.
He started his presentation by how and when the artificial aggregates came into existence. He shared his patented products. He has showcased the usage of such aggregates in concrete. He has done characterization, mechanical, flexural study on these aggregates.
Session 3: Utilisation of copper slag in concrete: Dr T Ch Madhavi, HoD/Civil, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai.
She has shared her research experience in utilizing copper slag as aggregate in concrete. She also shared about the funding by DST for supporting this initiative. She shared the results of characterization, Mechanical and flexural study. He insisted the participants to actively involve in research to explore the areas of improvement.
